Got to pick the solution based on your experience, resources and infrastructure. If you are primarily a Microsoft shop this could still be a solution for you. There are plenty of partners and .net developers out there who could get it running. It can work, but I personally wouldn’t recommend it unless you have someone on staff.

For WordPress, if you don’t have somebody in house you still need access to somebody. If you don’t have your own in-house person you should find a developer you can work with on a regular basis, or find a company like Mequoda. WordPress is going to need a developer if you are going to use it to build something like what Mequoda builds. You can build a simple site out of the box with Drupal. However, it is definitely nice to have a programmer on hand.

It’s important not to touch the core code, because when you upgrade, your changes are over written. As long as you have planned ahead and developed things the proper way, new modifications and add-ons through the theme, then upgrades are very easy.
