  • How are users interacting with your content?
  • Do users need to keep absolutely current on the latest information available?

Look at your brand, where it sits and what successful publishers in your market are charging for an annual subscription. Do careful price analysis in terms of pricing options, tiers, and price points. Remember, charging too much means you’ll limit your market share.

People often overestimate their market. They do this by looking at the number of nuclear engineers, bakers, or weekend woodworkers and assuming they can get a higher penetration than they’ve seen from these potential competitors.

Look at the market, profession or hobby you’re considering and pay close attention to the penetration levels of mature products in the two- to five-year range. If you’re aiming to have a much larger customer base than others in your market, you often price lower than you should. Charging too much can limit your market share. Charging too little can help you grab a solid market share, but the price may not sustain your business.

    I have way 2 much, I want to launch thus magazine with subcribtion to enhance my business as a general trader of great food,flowers,wine,decor and some awesomness , but somehow i find myself having articles about relationships,I need help just to find the right content,

    Just curious, Sarah, but what do you mean by “tools”? That word in itself can be pretty confusing to those unfamiliar with your content.

    Hi Sarah,

    There are a few answers to your question, the first is that you won’t get it right out of the box, but there’s plenty of room to iterate until you get it right.

    The second is to complete a usability audit on your site to make sure that navigation isn’t a problem. Make sure that the users know where to find the tools, and what all of them do. The thing about having too many tools is that they’re often hard to find.

    But it’s also been our experience that even when a site is complex and offers dozens of tools, most users only care about a few.

    So the third answer is that when you rebuild, you might choose the ones that are used most. Are all of the tools equally valuable to all users? Find out and iterate once you have that data.

    That same knowledge goes into your marketing, too – a message that highlights dozens of tools might be too complex, so an alternative is to understand which tools are most used, and then feature those with the benefits they offer.

    Test further by coming up with different emails that promote different tools to see which ones perform best. You can try two routes – focusing on the toolset itself, and then focusing on the problems and solutions each tool offers.

    Ok so we are about to launch a start up website. It looks like we are guilty of having too much content. The collection of content actually answers one problem, but to do this comprehensively a variety of tools has been required. However the sheer amount of tools now appears to have caused confusion of our offering (even internally). However the dilemma is that all these tools together are the solution that we want to make for the user. What would you advise? To remove the tools at this stage is too demanding as the site and subscription has been built to purpose, but obviously we wish to communicate more simply with out audience. For those sites that are loaded with content what solution can be given? I assume not all loaded sites are failures and that messaging and route to market are also critical factors? Very eager to hear your view and thanks for the timely, thought provoking article!!
