Is Twitter the “best” social network for publishers?

[question]

We’re just getting started using social media and are deciding whether or not to use Twitter, rather than Facebook. Would you consider Twitter the “best” social network for publishers?

[answer]

Depending on your audience, it could be the best, it could also be the worst. First try to figure out if your audience is on Twitter. Use Search.Twitter.com to look for your keywords and see if people are already tweeting about the topics you cover.

The reason why publishers tend to love Twitter is because it’s really the fastest way to “spread the word” quickly. You publish 140 characters and suddenly it’s spreading from your follower list and retweeted into other peoples lists, and soon all of Twitter knows about you and your promotion.

It may not be that dramatic, but it’s still the simplest, most effective tool for passing along information to a relevant audience. The more creative (and the more free), the quicker words will spread.

Facebook on the other hand, is better if you are trying to build a community around your brand that involves more than just shooting out one-liners. You can always use both though. Twitter is by far the least time-consuming of all the social networks.
