Digital Publishing News: MSLO, Real Simple, PMC, Fortune Mag, and More

Brands are busy this summer: Mashable and Guardian Media Group making digital publishing news, too

We’re starting the week off with a healthy dose of digital publishing news from both sides of the Atlantic: mergers & acquisitions, platform considerations, and personnel moves. We monitor industry trends from the best sources so that you can track them in your periphery and inform your approach while focusing on the most important thing: your product.

Today, we consult FishbowlNY for a handful of stories centering on digital publishing news. Let’s get started!

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Acquired for $350 Million

Sequential Brands Group has purchased MSLO for $350 million, FishbowlNY reports, with Stewart coming on as a stockholder with the board of directors.

Fortune Mag Needs Content

Since spinning off from Time Warner, Fortune has dedicated itself to platform publishing, aiming for upward of 30 posts per day, FishbowlNY reports.

“Fortune.com wants more 500- to 750-word pieces that cover venture capital and investment banking; high-end brands or services; cybersecurity; popular culture; jobs; and management issues for the site’s ‘Finance,’ ‘Luxury,’ ‘Technology,’ ‘Entertainment and Media,’ ‘Careers,’ and ‘Leadership’ sections, respectively,” Fortune mag says.

“Editors are particularly interested in smart, well-reported listicles and features on trending topics, such as women in leadership roles. Fortune has run since 1998 an annual list of the 50 ‘Most Powerful Women’ in business, and considers ‘MPW’ a franchise ranking.”

Shutterstock and Penske Media Corporation Join Powers

With a full roll-out in 2016, a partnership between Shutterstock and PMC will mean the former’s photographers will cover the latter’s conferences, ceremonies, and other events, while the resulting database – available to Rex Features and Shutterstock Premier-level subscribers, according to FishbowlNY – will also incorporate Women’s Wear Daily and Variety.

The Huffington Post Will Stay the Course Under Verizon

Though speculation was rampant that The Huffington Post might fold after parent company AOL was acquired by Verizon, it looks like the digital publishing news maker will hang on for at least another handful of years with Arianna Huffington’s new contract.

“I am convinced that we will have both the editorial independence and the additional resources that will allow HuffPost to lead the global media platform shift to mobile and video,” she said in a staff memo.

Personnel Moves: Real Simple, Guardian Media Group, and Mashable

Real Simple has named Cece Ryan – formerly the associate publisher of sales at People for 19 years – publisher, FishbowlNY reports.

David Pemsel, meanwhile, will succeed Andrew Miller as CEO of Guardian Media Group, FishbowlNY reports.

“David has been a key architect of GNM’s commercial success, digital strategy and international expansion,” GMG Chair Neil Berkett said in a statement. “I am therefore delighted that he is now stepping up to the top job, unquestionably one of the most demanding and exciting roles in the media industry.”

Finally, Mashable has hired Hillary Busis away from Entertainment Weekly as its new deputy entertainment editor, FishbowlNY reports.
