5 Digital Media Publisher Trends to Watch in 2016
TNM welcomes a guest columnist for a roundup of digital media publisher predictions in 2016, and the list touches on mixed publishing models, app streaming, corporate communications, and wearable tech. But the biggest trend?
“The first big trend we’re betting on is all about content distribution – and with the big tech players all vying for consumer attention, publishing channels such as Apple News, LinkedIn, and Snapchat Discover are going to be at the forefront of their battle for that attention, offering exciting new opportunities to publishers and consumers alike,” Arazoo Kadir writes.
“With built-in audiences, all of these channels provide a crucial platform for getting your content seen by people who may not even know you exist. Once you’re seen, the trick is then to corral them into your own properties (such as your website or apps) through the use of deep links and smart banners. If you’re clever, in one step you can send new readers from someone else’s service right into pages deep inside your app. The undeniable growth of these channels was also noted by our customer day attendees, who voted Apple News as the as the most significant third-party publishing platform to have emerged in 2015.”
AAM Announces Circulation Changes for Digital Newsstands
The Alliance for Audited Media has created a new category for measuring circulation among unlimited-access digital newsstands, Talking New Media reports.
“The new category will be able to report the average number of total requests by paid subscribers to receive a digital issue, the average number of times issues were opened, and the unique and total opens recorded,” Hebbard writes.

“The change comes after the AAM worked with MPA – The Association of Magazine Media, Magazines Canada and magazine publishers to determine the best way to handle these new digital newsstand services.”
Speaking of Digital Newsstands, Here’s an Interesting Startup
Readbug has added PAPER magazine to its growing stable, according to coverage in TNM.
“The addition of such a well-known US brand is a landmark moment in Readbug’s short history. Having launched in May, Readbug now hosts 55 independent magazines, all available digitally, with additional titles joining over the coming months,” Talking New Media reports via Readbug press release.
“Rather than using print PDFs, Readbug optimises content for mobile devices, totally revolutionising the way magazines are read on mobile. As well as giving readers portable access to their favourite magazines, the app also offers a curated reading experience, pulling together articles from multiple titles into a stream to match a user’s interest and providing various themed content channels.”
AIM Launches In-House Branded Content Agency
Active Interest Media is the latest digital media publisher to bring branded content in-house, TNM reports.
“With the launch of Catapult Creative Labs, we’re bringing together a talented team of content producers and marketers across all mediums to facilitate dynamic audience conversations for our partners,” AIM CEO Andy Clurman said in a statement.
“Our award-winning journalists, filmmakers, designers, and digital specialists will help grow client brands in the marine, healthy living, outdoor, equine, and specialty home industries.”
TeamRock Teams With Spotify for Podcasts, Other Programs
TeamRock has forged a content partnership that will include creating a podcast, TNM reports.
“TeamRock and Spotify have joined forces for a content partnership that will launch with Metal Hammer: In Residence from next month” TNM relays from a TeamRock press release.
“The deal will see TeamRock create and produce a number of radio programmes and podcasts from its stable of rock magazines – which includes Hammer, Classic Rock, Prog and The Blues.”
