Subscription websites are gaining in popularity and this free podcast goes over different subscription website archetypes
Our Mequoda Pro members had the opportunity to experience our Building Subscription Websites webinar this week. The webinar included experienced publishers Don Nicholas and Phil Ash as they went through the process of building subscription websites.
Our new Digital Media Podcast: An Introduction to Subscription Websites was inspired by this webinar. We see the tremendous value that subscription websites can have for online publishers. They create an environment where their content can continuously be updated while utilizing a model that can operate a renewal process and keep overhead costs down.
Subscription websites are also valuable to niche publishers who want to offer subscriptions through the iPad. From what we’ve seen, Apple is allowing publishers to offer subscriptions through the iPad as long as they have a working subscription website in place. Why is it this way? Apple wants to sell iPads and publishers want to sell subscriptions; what better way for Apple to entice new customers by offering subscriptions to publications they are interested in.

Our Digital Media Podcast: An Introduction to Subscription Websites discusses the different website archetypes we have seen throughout the Internet. This of course includes a variety of subscription-based websites. If you are planning on developing a subscription website in the near future, this content may be helpful in the process.
This new popularity behind subscription websites is interesting to see, especially since the iPad has convinced consumers that paying for premium content is worth it. The subscription website will likely become the nexus for online publishers going forward. Will you strive to develop one? I’d love to hear your thoughts on subscription websites below.
