What’s in a Name? Find Out Here.

Could Next ‘Twitter’ Come Out of Fall Roundtable?

What’s in a name? A lot, apparently. Would Twitter be so popular if it was called, say, Patter? (I guess then you could re-pat, ex-pat and patdeck.) According to an article on Mashable this week, “Twitter” came out of a closed-door meeting of company executives (and with a little twist of fate).

Other brainstorms that came out of similar meetings include Aardvark (which apparently will soon be closed down by Google)—the old list-us-first-alphabetically had to be at play there; Spotify, a cross between spot and identify; Twillo, a cloud communications company—“What we started doing is saying, we want to invent a word,” said a founder (notice the “we”); and Scribd—company execs liked the ties to publishing and writing.

Will a new name be invented at SIPA’s upcoming Fall Publishers Roundtable Conference, Wednesday, Oct. 5 in New York? Perhaps. But there will definitely be many new solutions and monetizing options discussed and, yes, invented. Because what’s interesting about this meeting is that it is closed doors and off the record. I was just trying to look up some valuable tidbits from the past editions and couldn’t find anything—and then remembered the privacy that makes this meeting unique. Participants are forthcoming in a way that they can’t be at other meetings.

SIPA members are widely known to be very open with their information anyway. But we all know that there is certain information—like financials—that you will not hear at, say, December’s Marketing Conference. The Fall Publishers Roundtable is really the best SIPA meeting for getting in a room and talking privately about what is and isn’t working for your company. (And if you do need a new name or name change, this is definitely the meeting for you!)

There’s just something about sitting around a table and talking about your concerns that brings out the best in people. You will be engaging with leaders of the industry, people who appear often on the national media scene. And you will be discussing the future of our industry and what trends and products we all need to be aware of and plan for. Networking here will be off the charts. It’s intimate enough where you will meet people that you can easily call on the following week. We’re talking confidential, in-depth and a limit of 35 people; that’s a treasure trove for the participants.

An extra opportunity for you would be to come a day early and attend the eLearning Workshop on Tuesday, October 4. eLearning is one of the hottest opportunities for delivering premium information. Sign up for both now and save $200 off of the early bird price! We will talk more about that session in this space next week.

And if you are on the other side of the Atlantic, there’s a terrific workshop also for publishers and owners. SIPA UK’s Business Owner’s Workshop: The Seven Pillars of a Better Business takes place Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011, at 8.00 at Telephone House on Paul Street in London.

The workshop, delivered by Gerard Burke, founder and MD of Your Business Your Future, has been developed from the insights of 600 of the UK’s most successful owner managers. The Seven Pillars of a Better Business are seven characteristics which seem to distinguish owner managers who build better businesses from those who don’t do quite so well. Hear from other SIPA publishers who have gone through the Seven Pillars and what it’s meant to their businesses and themselves personally.

Gerard has worked with hundreds of owner managers from many years, including the owner managers of some of the UK’s fastest growing businesses. See his promo video here and register now!
