Editor in Chief Douglas S. Barach and Online Editor Scott Dodd recently announced that OnEarth Magazine will switch to a monthly digital format and cease quarterly hard-copy production following its summer issue.
The magazine – a nonprofit publication of the Natural Resources Defense Council and a bastion of environmental journalism since 1979 – will also include daily web coverage, according to FishbowlNY.
“We remain committed to publishing powerful, engaging stories in bold new ways that we believe can reach more readers than ever. And we think the most effective way to do that is through innovative digital formats that don’t require spending a huge chunk of our budget on paper, postage and printing – a change that seems only appropriate for a publication dedicated to preserving earth’s resources,” Barach and Dodd said. “Of course, we feel a little sad about ending our 35-year print run, but reinvention has long been a part of OnEarth’s DNA.”
OnEarth‘s digital staff will include editor-at-large Ted Genoways, news blogger Jason Bittel, and five staff writers.
