Multiplatform Publishing Personnel on the Move at Dwell, Time and Rodale

Dwell experiences executive shift; Previous VP, Brand Sales returns to Time Inc. amidst multiplatform publishing personnel change; Rodale names new editor in chief for Bicycling magazine

We see a lot of multiplatform publishing personnel changes within the digital publishing industry. There’s no surprise in it as the evolution of multiplatform media brands continue.

Today we begin with Dwell and its recent executive change. Folio: reports, “Michela O’Connor Abrams — who spent the past 15 years as CEO of home design magazine-turned-technology platform Dwell — has left the company, Folio: has learned. Re-taking the reins is Lara Deam, who has served as chair of Dwell Media’s board since founding the magazine in 2000.”

“Abrams is not the only high-profile exec to leave Dwell over the past few months. Chief technology officer Bobby Gaza, who was brought in from Apple in 2015 specifically to lead Dwell.com’s digital shift from straightforward media site to a more community-minded, “collaborative platform,” departed the company in December before resurfacing in February at Pandora as VP of engineering.”

An update on this multiplatform publishing personnel change came a few days after the initial news. “Dwell CEO Lara Deam confirms to Folio: that Abrams left the company in mid-January, concurrent with a repositioning of Dwell magazine that reduces its frequency to bimonthly, lowers its rate base, and increases its paper stock.”

Next, we move to Time Inc., who is welcoming back Lori Fromm as VP, Brand Sales. Talking New Media reports, “Time Inc. has announced that Lori Fromm has rejoined the company as VP, Brand Sales, effective immediately. Fromm, who most recently was Head of Integrated Sales & Strategy for Glamour and Self, is now responsible for generating revenue for Time Inc.’s Lifestyle brands, such as Real Simple, Cooking Light, Health, MyRecipes.com and Cozi across platforms. She reports to Ann Gobel, Vice President, Lifestyle Brand Group.”

“During her tenure at Condé Nast, Fromm led a comprehensive sales re-launch and new branding campaigns for Glamour and Self. Earlier at Time Inc., Fromm served as Advertising Director of InStyle from 2011 to 2013. She began her career at the company’s Parenting Group, where she rose through the ranks during her tenure to become Publisher of Baby Talk. Fromm has also served as associate publisher of Elle and held senior sales roles at GFK/NOP World.”

Our final news story of the day looks at Rodale and its recent naming of Leah Flickinger as the new editor in chief of Bicycling magazine. The Morning Call reports, “Flickinger, who lives in Kintnersville, joined Rodale almost 20 years ago, first working at Rodale Books where she rose to senior editor. She acquired and edited more than 25 nonfiction books in the areas of health, fitness and sports. From 2007-2010 she served as deputy editor at another Rodale product, Women’s Health.”

“Flickinger previously served as Bicycling’s executive editor since 2010. Her work has been recognized with two National Magazine Award nominations, as well as inclusion in the Best American Sports Writing.”
