Buying and selling directly on social networks has been around before but it appears to be escalating, especially after Twitter recently started testing the “Buy” button on tweets.

Throughout the years we’ve seen email succeed as a platform for selling, but has social media caught up at all? A new article from eMarketer reports on social commerce. “According to August 2014 polling by Harris Poll for DigitasLBi, which found that just 5% of US adult internet users had made a purchase on a social network such as Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest.”

So it seems social is still not a popular avenue for buyers. And the reasons why buyers are hesitant seems to be aligned with the inherent use of social media, including the ability to share and privacy. “Fully 42% of users said they would be more likely to make a purchase via social if they knew their credit information was secure, while 38% said knowing their purchase wouldn’t be shared would increase their likelihood of completing such a transaction.”
