Coming Soon: New Content Verticals for Medium

With editorial verticals – including sports, politics, fashion, food, and travel – launching next week, Medium is making a push for more quality content on a more consistent basis, while retaining its contributor-based philosophy. Even so, its design, interface, and reader expectations don’t lend themselves to advertising.

“Right now it’s just an experiment … they’re not even trying to make money; they’re just trying to make lots of good-looking content,” Jackdaw Research’s Jan Dawson told Digiday. “There are a lot of websites that have built audiences, and when it comes time to monetize, they either fail to do so or do it in a way that turns off the audience.”
