New data shows growth for in-app purchases
Mobile apps are an evolving industry. With an estimated 60 million Americans owning a smartphone, the evolution in mobile apps can mean a new revenue stream for online publishers.
The market of mobile apps has grown significantly, as all major application stores have experienced triple-digit increases.
Free apps have become increasingly popular, as their growth has outpaced that of the individual app stores as a while.

Furthermore, in-app purchasing opportunities have become more valuable as monetization types. From June 2010 to December 2010, in-app purchases doubled their share of iPad app revenues from 12% to 29%. During this same time period, in-app purchases for the iPhone increased from 36% to 49% of revenues.
Some online publishers have been testing the freemium model by offering applications for free that also include additional in-app purchasing opportunities.
