Google+ is experiencing momentum, but will that last?
Are you already a fan of Google+? Have you even used it?
According to Mashable, the user base of Google+ is already at 10 million after two weeks.
The momentum for Google+ also includes the amount of engagement it’s experiencing.
Larry Page, Google CEO, has said that those 10 million users share 1 billion items each day. The Google+ website is also being hit 2.3 billion times per day.
Perhaps Google got it right this time as Google+ is currently experiencing better results than Google’s last foray into social media with Google Buzz. At the time of Google Buzz’s launch, social media mentions about it never surpassed 150,000. At the time of Google+’s launch, its peak surpassed 250,000 mentions. For Google+, 85% of the social media mentions about it were positive.
Google+ appears to have launched successfully, but will this popularity continue? Will Google+ eventually become a social media king?

The future of Google+
One article from Mashable discusses sites with FriendFeed and Quora, which had strong early adoption but never took off with mainstream popularity.
Will the same happen to Google+? Is there a need for another social network, especially after many people who aren’t incredibly familiar with technology have come to learn and adopt social networks like Facebook?
In a recent article from Search Engine Watch, Dave Davies writes about reasons why Google+ will not kill Facebook.
The five reasons Davies gives as to why Google+ will not kill Facebook are usability, verbiage, usefulness, purpose and convenience. The convenience factor touches on what I mentioned above: why would I need another social network? As Davies puts it, “I’ve got Facebook, Twitter, Skype, AIM, MSN, forums, a blog, email, the phone and (here comes the shocker) live human interaction. Why on Earth would I want another?”
If the popularity of Google+ continues, and the platform continues to grow, then maybe everyone will want to have this other social media platform…
What do you think about Google+? If you’re on it, how do you like it? Are you using it more over other social networks?
If you aren’t on Google+ yet, do you plan to be? Or is it just another social network in your eyes? I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments section below.
Hello Chris
100% Better! Been using g+ for a couple of weeks now.
I haven’t come across and “are you sure you know this person?”,and no issues with any images I have posted. Everyone is adding everyone in circles as there is no mutual agreement needed to be added. It seems to be a much more open community. I think of Facebook as the religious right and Google+ as the free speech liberals.
See you on G+
Jason
Hi Jason,
Thanks for the comment. It is good to hear that Google+ is more of an open community. I had always hoped Facebook would get to that point… Looks like I will be seeing you on G+!
Best,
Chris
I have been waiting for a good alternative to facebook for the last 2 years. I don’t mind giving up my info for a free social service. However I hate being told what I can and what I can’t do. I feel like facebook is the playground bully who changes the rules of the game and threatens to take his ball and go home. I think this is the beginning of the end of facebook.
Hi Jason,
I know many people who share similar feelings towards Facebook. Have you started using Google+? If so, does that platform treat you better than Facebook does?
Thanks for commenting. You insight is greatly appreciated.
Best,
Chris
