Search engine optimization hints from Google
Last week, Google came out with Google Zeitgeist 2010, which is a visual representation of how the world searched this past year. This tool is especially helpful just to see what the hot topics were. You can always see what’s hot at the current moment with Google Trends, but this consolidates that data in a year full of top search queries.
So how does this affect you as a publisher? Well, let’s say you’re a health publisher. By looking here, you’ll see that aspergers, vitamin d deficiency and even mcdonalds nutrition were at the top of the list. These are all topics you might focus on more in the coming months. If you’re a food publisher, you might want to know that cupcakes, and guacamole recipe are at the top of the list.
Anything that Google puts out that gives you any kind of insight into what people are searching for, you should certainly be paying attention to.

They also made some updates to their advanced search options.
From the Google Blog:
“We work every day to make information available to everyone on the web. This week we made it easier for to you pinpoint exactly the information you need with a new advanced search feature that categorizes results by reading level.
For example, if you’re writing a college paper on [herbivores] you can refine to see only advanced material, or if you’re a grade school teacher preparing for a class on [herbivores] you can refine to see only basic material. To try it out, click “advanced search” to the right of the search box and click in the new reading level section.
You can filter to see only results that are basic, intermediate or advanced, and annotate results with reading levels. If you choose to annotate results, on the results page you’ll see a graphical distribution of the pages classified in different categories for your search.”
