An advantage for website visibility and SEO campaign management at your fingertips
Publishing and marketing on the internet can be a complex matter. With continuous growth, the amount of websites available is enormous. It’s hard to calculate specifically, since new websites are generated each day, but estimations have shown that there are over 200 million websites on the internet. This is a main reason why it can be extremely difficult for your website to be found.
What are you doing to assure visibility for your website?
Researching keywords is the first step in this process and it can benefit you in a number of ways.
Any time you name an article, a topic, a book or a free product, you should be paying attention to the keywords you’re using.
Your website, your website’s title tag and the meta tags also fall into this category as well.
Why it’s so important to research keywords
According to Alexa, the web information company, not only is Google the most popular search engine, but it is the most popular website on the entire web. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. Google has created search technology that features PageRank, the collection of immense data, and an option to find similar pages.
Google created a program for others to make money with in Google Adsense, yet is constantly gaining more content and advertising possibilities for itself. Talk about brilliant.
So now we have Google and you want your website to be found. By following the ever-changing Google search algorithm you will have a much greater chance of being found.

By doing research you will be able to see the search volume for keywords, how much competition there is on any given keyword, which then helps determine the keywords worth going after. Some words will be heavily targeted and heavily used, which will diminish your chances of being found. That doesn’t mean there aren’t popular alternatives.
What your research will yield
If you need more of a reason for doing keyword research, here it is: The Keyword Universe.
A keyword universe is a collection of keywords that will be specifically designed for your niche publication. A keyword universe can easily contain thousands of keywords and should be used in a number of ways to increase business. These ways include:
-Giving your editors, content creators, and marketers the keyword universe to use as an editorial guideline.
-Using the keyword universe to create titles for books, articles and products.
-Discovering topics in your niche that you didn’t know your audience is searching for.
-Using the keyword universe as a method for tagging articles and other content.
Google has come to be more than just a search engine. Understanding and utilizing the technology behind it will help your website move up in the world of search engines. Keyword research will ultimately show you what keywords should be targeted and which shouldn’t, in order to gain better visibility for your website.
I realize that this is a “come on” for a Webinar (one which I’ll probably attend), but this post would have been more useful if you had included some pointers to how to discover your “keyword universe”.. In addition to noting what Keywords users search for to get to your site or on your site (from Google Analytics), I also use Google Trends to see which words most people around the world are using when searching for different concepts or products. It’s quite useful.
Another good tip for copywriting. Read Amazon book reviews on the topic at hand and see what terms book reviewers in that discipline use.
Hi Patty,
Thanks for the comment and suggestion. My blog post on Monday will be discussing the Keyword Universe in some more detail.
